Reel Features Season 14 Ticket 9
It seems like only weeks have gone by since the 4th installment to the Jurassic Park Series took place in 2015.
It did leave me wondering for many-a-year after the less-than-pleasing reception that 2001's Jurassic Park III had received with not only being the shortest movie of the series with it clocking in at 92 minutes and was also the least profitable taking $368.8 Million from the Box Office against a budget of $93 Million. Now on one hand you can make the case that it made a profit, but compared to what the original and 1997's The Lost World had made, making a 1.6 Billion Dollars between them, then 368 Million is seen as a downgrade when he had seen better performances. I think it was wise in hindsight for the Franchise to go into hibernation for as long as it did as there weren't any ideas credible enough to breathe new life into the story. I think the story that Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver brought was decent of making the Theme Park a reality. It's not by any means on par with the original as very few seldom movies ever achieve that accolade, with one exception in my opinion being 2004's Spider-Man 2. Sam Raimi had taken what he had achieved as the Director from that and have expanded what it meant for Peter Parker to maintain his responsibility as a crime-fighter and knowing he had to be a loner and not put those he loved in jeopardy. As I mention in the video, this movie seemed to ignore the realistic tone of the original trilogy of portraying the dinosaurs as animals and not movie monsters. That and the idea of Owen riding his motorcycle in the Jungle with the Velociraptors was ridiculous despite the impressive spectacle it appeared to be. Now because Owen had been training his animals to follow commands in which they do respond to him at the same time these are still carnivorous animals with predatory instincts that will still look at other dinosaurs and people as food. I think what ultimately fails this movie is trying to make it too much like the modern action movies when being Jurassic Park was all that it needed and more, The first movie was groundbreaking in 1993 that brought a level of never before seen credibility and appreciation for these animals. And then Jurassic World effectively that upside down making them into movie monsters especially when the original T-Rex from Jurassic Park did battle with the Indominus Rex. I mention that it was like watching Optimus Prime Vs Megatron from 2007's Transformers. Now that could get away with being an OTT action movie because that for the most part worked. But in the context of Jurassic Park when you look at the first 3 movies compared to Jurassic World is night and day. But....it did do one good thing. It made us forget about Jurassic Park 3. I still consider that to be the worst of the series. My opinion. So, in retrospect.... 5 years later, it's ok. Not awful, but certainly not like the original which is still the standard to beat.
