Reel Features Season 2 Ticket 8
2003s Underworld.
I think this was the first major movie to have a situation where it is vampires vs werewolves or lycans as they prefer to be depicted as. When you have an ensemble cast of Kate Beckinsale, Michael Sheen, and Bill Nighy it is safe to say that some very spectacular moments are going to happen within the duration of this movie. The director Len Wiseman knew what he was doing when he crafted this movie together along with the way it was shot using the very dark blue filter to create an atmosphere along with the advancement in prosthetics particularly when paying attention to the lycan suits which I'm glad that they didn't just straight up CD the creatures on screen granted the transformations were probably computer generated in hands but the creature effect with the actors on screen were prosthetic suits and enhancements for what they had to wear. What is particularly endearing about the character of Salene played by Kate is that this character is not in the same place by the end of the movie and this is always been the sign of good writing and characterization where a character is never in the same place as they began with Salene starts out as a leader of the death dealers as the one who is charged with slaying the lycans who are the vampires sworn enemies. Matches are further complicate when she starts forming feelings and affections for a Gentleman by the name of Michael Corvin who is a descendant of The Corvenis Clan. He is actually a very powerful character who is played by Scott speedman as somebody who could combine the bloodline of a vampire and a lycan that would have the strength of both and The Weakness of neither so basically you would have the brute strength of a werewolf but the Cunning and agile speed of that of a vampire. Beckinsale and speedman have reasonably good chemistry to where you can actually believe that there is this love there's actually forming between these two characters even though Selene knows there is so much wrong with the idea of a union possibly happening between the two be giving her responsibilities and her role as the leader of the death dealers. Things get even more interesting with the Resurrection or Awakening of Bill Nighy as the vampire Victor and this guy is just straight up having the scene up whilst chewing it up at the same time but given that he's playing a vampire I think he's allowed to have some kind of credence for that. But that said he just does it so well. It gets revealed that Victor was the one who had his own daughter Sonia killed when it is learnt that the lichen Lucian had impregnated his daughter and there lay the possibility of a union between vampire and lycan and it is something that Victor absolutely be tested because he said there can be no such Union. This is told through flashbacks that even get passed on to Michael after he is bitten by Lucian which it's an interesting idea that memories can be passed on to you through fluid from one person to another. Michael Sheen really plays the campness up of the leader of the lycans and it is something that he's known for in his movie reviews as well as playing the character of Zeus in 2010s Tron Legacy where he's playing a role that I that oh my gosh I cannot believe that he's trying to be Ziggy Stardust from David Bowie. A wise man once said play to your strengths. And he certainly does that and he does the role of Lucy and Proud which he reprises in 2009 Underworld: rise of the lycans. I say in the 10 + years since this movie has come out it is aged quite well if I'm being completely honest. The production value is quite high the writing is solid the cast of great the effects from special to visual really hold up well after all these years and all I know it's one of those movies that you can just put on and just get fully immersed into the story. The Knight fully recommends this. Links to purchase the movie are down below. enjoy.
