Reel Features Season 2: Ticket 5
Like a lot of movies in 2014 I went in with the mindset of going in with an open Clean slate and just judging them for what they were - and this being one of them which is a movie adaptation based on a TV series of the same name.
We have Denzel Washington as the lead protagonist and what I like that the writing does efficiently well is that there is a lot of mystery to this character all we know is that aside from being a a sales assistant at a hardware store, he's pretty much a very chill and mild-mannered individual that likes to do a lot of Reading and is very well equipped in defusing a hostile situation that only a government operative or a Navy SEAL would know based upon the fight scenes and is hand to hand combat skills are anything to go by. And that's just a thing even when the antagonist are trying to decipher what exactly and who exactly he is it also leaves the audience in a bit of a mystery - it's only later in the movie when you see him conversing with two long-standing colleagues, that you get the understanding that he obviously worked for a government protection agency in some capacity but other than that the movie offers very little as to the background history of the character and I think that's actually a good thing because if you remove the veil of mystery then there's no mystique to a character. One character we don't really see too much are once she has been hospitalized due to wrongdoings that is done off camera so though you presume this is done through physical abuse is the character of Terri played by the very talented Chloe Grace Moretz. I had seen Chloe perform in movies like kick-ass Kick-ass 2 and the very underrated let me in so I knew full well when she was attached to this particular Project it was going to be done Justice because i k mentioned a very talented actress for such a young age that at the time though she could do no wrong. And she does no wrong here - there's kind of an implied father daughter Style relationship between Washington and Moretz with the way that he looks out for her after he can see that there's something Shady going on with the way that she's been treated and the way she just looks exhausted in most nice that she comes into the cafe that he decides to step in be that guy that she can look out to. The majority of the movie is seen with Washington going after the various people that had hospitalized Terry eventually working his way up to the head of what I can only presume was a Russian mafia boss and then going even much further going abroad and taking out his boss. There were few movies out in 2014 that I didn't really have a lot of time for thankfully this is not one of them - the writing is solid the Casting is amazing and a direction from Antoine fuqua just made this even more memorable and it helps that there is a decent working dynamic between Anton and Denzel from them on the time when they worked together with the movie training day it should also be noted that Antoine fuqua was also the man who directed the music video for a Coolio's 1995 hit Gangsta's Paradise. Most definitely worth a look.
