I know I'm late to the part in making an article about this, but better late than never, right? I didn't think that Sega would take the classic approach for the 25th Anniversary but based on the fact that Christian Whitehead of Head Cannon is the lead programmer on this who successfully ported Sonic CD, Sonic 1 & 2 to Xbox Live, PSN & Mobile platforms and got the physics right first time where SonicTeam got it wrong when they delivered Sonic 4 Episode 1 & 2. And the general feel from the trailers with the physics, the music, the art-style of the pixels and the right colour texture tells me that one of my childhood favourites is in very good hands and I could not be happier. Hearing and seeing the reactions from fellow fans from reaction videos to fans who attended the 25th Anniversary Party at San Diego Comic-con is very encouraging as you'll see below That reaction was amazing. To know that Sonic can evoke a reaction like that after 25 years is nothing short of awesome. Like most of them I am glad that Sega are using Classic Knuckles and not the clueless version that they have in Sonic Boom as he's become a parody of what he was when he first started out in 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The whole point of Knuckles' character is that he's naive as he hasn't much contact with the outside world having grown up on a floating island all by himself. And again this is where Sonic Team have missed the point as there's a difference between stupid and naive. Naive in a lot of ways is not having the street-smarts or social-skills to know when and not to do things whereas stupid is continuing to do as such even when you've enough experience to not to repeat. But I rest my case. There's not a lot to go with on this aside from the fact that we can see the stakes will be high as it looks like an almost post appocalyptic situation in which Sonic will have to pull out all the stops in order to take out the Megazord sized Robotnik mechs. Now it has been reported that the head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka; has said that this is not a sequel 2011's to Sonic Generations and yet Classic Sonic is seen leaping in saving Modern Sonic from being crushed. So what does this all mean? Have the events from Generations altered the timelines to where Classic has found a way Back to the Future foreseeing these events knowing that his modern counterpart needs help, or is it just pure coincidence? I'm inclined to believe the latter. Furthemore, word on the wire has it that there will be more Sonics joining the cause as it says at the end of the trailer *SPOILER ALERT* "Joine the Resistance" which leads me to believe there is going to be more than one character helping the two Sonics. Some are speculating that the Sonic Boom counterpart will join along with one of the cartoon Sonic's from the 90s with the hope that Jaleel White will finally reprise his role and voice him in a game. It was hoped for 1999's Sonic Adventure that Jaleel would voice him but it went to Ryan Drummond who in all fairness did a good job despite what some fans say. This one I felt was slightly less of a pop than Mania which is fine, as I mentioned above we don't have a heck of a lot to go and in some way that's actually better as that adds a layer of mystery with regards to the story, the tone and what the title of the game will be.
Much to some fans' disappointment its not Sonic Adventure 3. I would have preferred to have been that just so it can be done, have closure and finally move on. I do feel like SA 3 is that long sought after piece in Sonic's career that has been denied so long but given the fact that we have 2 seemingly very good games in the works is something to be very excited for. The mere fact that Sega are taking their time with these games is a step in the right direction as so many times before in the past where they have rushed production on games like Sonic 360 and Generations that is has left a less than positive response. But that said Sonic Generations is arguably one of the better games to date. My only major critique with that game is that it could have been longer. If this is the sign of things to come then I like it. The Hedgehog with Attitude IS BACK!!!
